Slightly larger than JitterBug, DragonFly is a digital-audio converter and headphone amplifier with an onboard 64-step analog volume control. It has a USB plug at one end and a 3.5mm minijack at the opposite end. It connects to any Mac or Windows PC and bypasses the computer’s compromised audio circuitry to deliver cleaner, clearer, more naturally detailed sound to headphones, powered desktop speakers, or complete audio systems. Insert JitterBug in series with DragonFly to further reduce noise and resonances.

- Dragonfly v1.5 also incorporates improved 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC chips-the 9010-which employs minimum-phase filtering for naturally detailed, more authentic sound.
Among the improvements, the circuitry between the DAC chip and the analog output stage has been refined to create a more direct signal path, leading to even greater transparency and immediacy. Also, the DAC's power supply has been fortified, which gives the sound more “grip," and even greater dynamic contrast.
DragonFly v1.5 plugs directly into a USB jack on a Mac® or Windows® PC. By bypassing the computer’s internal sound card, DragonFly delivers much more articulate, dynamic and involving sound than what can be heard from the computer by itself, turning any computer into a true high-fidelity music source for headphones, ear buds, and home-entertainment systems.
In “variable” output mode, DragonFly v1.5’s full 1.2-volt output is twice the audio output of many computers, allowing it to easily drive headphones and ear buds directly.
DragonFly can also drive powered speakers or a power amplifier via its 60-position analog volume controlled preamplifier stage; digital volume controls too often throw away "bits," giving up signal resolution and sound quality.
In “fixed” output mode, DragonFly v1.5 behaves like a traditional DAC or disc player, sending a line-level signal to a preamp or AV receiver. All that’s required is a low-distortion cable with a 3.5mm plug on the DragonFly end, and a 3.5mm stereo plug or dual RCAs at the receiving end.
Rather than sharing crucial audio “data clocking” functions with the computer, DragonFly v1.5 employs sophisticated “asynchronous” USB audio data transfer, which dramatically reduces digital-timing errors. In addition, thanks to two completely independent fixed frequency master clocks (one for 44.1kHz/88.2kHz signals and another for 48kHz/96kHz signals), the algorithms used to convert the digital-audio data to analog never have to be applied to approximate versions of the native sample rate of the audio content being played, ensuring better “tracking” and better sound. A smart 5-color LED indicator on DragonFly v1.5 shows the resolution of the incoming signal.
